The first phase of the project uses Nokia's developer tools on the Windows NT platform to develop the the following applications:
  • WAP hosting management
  • Security
  • E-mail access
  • Internet access

To address scalability issues, we anticipate that this will be expanded to include development for the AIX platform and IBM's own WAP Gateway.

We are using the following Nokia tools to develop WAP hosting applications:
  • Nokia WAP Server
Although the Nokia WAP Server is primarily used as a gateway between WAP clients and the Web, we also use it as a Web server. In addition to gateway/server software, the Nokia WAP Server contains an administrator GUI, which enables control over the server.

  • Nokia WAP Toolkit
We use the Toolkit to develop WAP hosting applications, using standard WAP languages, such as:
    • WML (the WAP version of HTML)
    • WMLScript (the WAP version of JavaScript)
    • Java Servlet (enables a connection to other applications)
    • Nokia Device Simulator (simulates a Nokia handset, for testing)

  • Nokia 7110 Handset
We use this WAP-enabled device to test the WAP hosting applications under development.

Further details about Nokia tools may be found in the Nokia's Developer Forum (http://www.forum.nokia.com/main.html).
