The combination of signal processing knowledge and efficient programming skills have resulted in the efficient development, implementation, and optimization of different audio and video compression algorithms in our group. Floating-point solutions are available on Windows and AIX platforms. Some fixed point solutions are available on the IBM MWave digital signal processor. Some of the decoders are ported to Java and optimized in terms of complexity and class size to be used by portable client applets.
Standard implementations include ITU-T speech coders, ETSI-GSM speech coders, ISO MPEG-1 audio coder (layers I and II), Dolby AC-3 audio decoder, H.263+, and MPEG-1 Video coders. Activity in the area of MPEG-4 coders is also taking place, and a Java-based MPEG-4 decoder for the Java Media Framework was publicly released on the IBM AlphaWorks site. Poprietary solutions are also developed to answer the special needs of IBM. For example, the group is engaged in a long term, ambitious research project on high quality, real-time compression of speech signals at bit rates below 1000 bit/sec.
